D-Day, B-Day (March 2) Part 2

Bethany was getting stitched up from the C-section when I get back to the OR. They felt pretty confident about Gail's condition... to the point that they were asking if they should bring her to us even before Bethany was back to the room. Then, once we got to the room, they brought Gail in to see mommy.

After giving us a few minutes of breathing room, they got ready to move us from labor and delivery to maternity. They released the brakes on Bethany's bed and wheeled her over to the elevator and we rode up to maternity.

The maternity rooms were about half the size as labor and delivery, but still very nice. Gail got her own little crib with her name beautifully inscribed on it.

Unfortunately, Gail's day was not over. The next 6 hours involved a frustrating set of tests, monitors and general poking.

The biggest problem Gail had was a very low blood sugar of 32.

32 what, you may ask?

I never found out.

(This was the most frustrating aspect of being in the hospital... everyone throws numbers around but never tell us what a baseline is or even what units they're using.) In any case, they couldn't wait for Gail to nurse her way up to a decent blood sugar, so they brought her back into the nursery (a different room across the hall) to give her some formula.

Not being particularly excited about having my baby taken, I followed her to the nursery (abandoning Bethany for a while) where I got to be the one to feed her the 60cc of formula. That worked tolerably well except for the fact that, around the last 15cc, she started dozing off. We kept trying to wake her but she hadn't really had a chance to relax since she came out. It would be like walking a 2 year old around Disneyland all day and then expecting her to drive home.

Eventually, the nurses gave up and we brought her back to our room for a well deserved sleep. But not, of course, without getting a couple pictures of her and daddy on her first day.
